- Recommendation for Asia -
 IUCN/SSC Otter Specialist Group
VIII International Otter Colloquium (IOC)
Valdivia/Chile, January 20 - 26, 2001

1. to develop awareness activities including publications, media events, etc., especially in local languages and English.

2. to encourage detailed ecological and regional studies of the hairy-nosed otter. The discovery of the hairy-nosed otter in Thailand induced the effort to confirm its existence in other Asian countries.

3. to contact Chinese government authorities, especially ministries of Forestry and Water conservancy to promote otter conservation and research in China.

4. to initiate status and distribution surveys in this region to address the lack of reliable information on otters in West Asia and some countries in Southeast and East Asia such as Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, North Korea, Mongolia.

5. to develop a standardisation of survey methods in the above mentioned countries with the support of the respective government agencies.

6. to include otters in Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA).

7. to emphasise concern about endocrine disruptors and otters response to organochlorines and other chemicals in making decisions on the use of chemicals in rice production, other agriculture, industrial uses, health (malaria) control.

8. to enhance the activities of NGOs and GOs in their cooperation on wetland conservation.

9. to use Geographic Information Systems to assess the habitat requirements of otters and trends in habitat (especially wetland) availability.

10. to promote genetic studies of systematics and ecology for conservation measures, including development of the method for identification of species by DNA from spraints.

11. to conduct more studies on conflicts between humans and otters (e.g., aquaculture, rice fields and general fisheries), to develop and implement adequate solutions.
